9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower premieres Monday, Sept. 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE on CBC Newsworld. It’s part of a series of documentaries airing on CBC Newsworld investigating some of the world’s most persistent conspiracy theories—from Sept. 11 to the apocalyptic predictions of ‘Peak Oil’.

9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower delves into one of the mysteries surrounding Sept. 11—a third tower at the World Trade Centre, which along with the Twin Towers, collapsed on that fateful day. But a plane never hit this skyscraper. This 47-story tower fell seven hours after the others and has become the subject of heated speculation and conspiracy theories, largely fuelled by the Internet. Sept. 11 was the first global event in the age of the worldwide web and it’s being used as a platform for a wide range of conspiracy theories—more than 50 at the last count—that allege the U.S. government was somehow involved in the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

Conspiracy theorists like Dylan Avery believe the Third Tower was brought down by a series of controlled explosions. Avery is the 24-year-old documentary maker behind the Internet phenomenon Loose Change, which has been viewed tens of millions of times online. He and his film pull no punches, claiming a government conspiracy was behind the events of Sept. 11 and the ensuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The mysterious collapse of the third tower is central to his argument. It’s an accusation the U.S. Government categorically denies.

After seven years, on Aug. 21, 2008, the official report on the World Trade Centre collapse of Building 7 (the Third Tower) was released. U.S. Federal investigators concluded that fire weakened floor beams and a critical support column leading to the collapse of the third tower. However, that would make the third tower the first and only skyscraper in the world to collapse solely due to fire. 9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower explores the many questions that continue to fuel conspiracy theorists.

9/11 Conspiracy Files: The Third Tower is directed by Mike Rudin, and produced for the BBC, part of a series investigating and debunking widely held conspiracy theories, while also exploring the inconsistencies and holes in the official accounts.

Oil Apocalypse Now? The world television premiere airs Monday, Sept. 15, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on THE PASSIONATE EYE on CBC Newsworld. Shot in 13 countries over a four-year period, Oil Apocalypse Now? reveals the myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the future of our world’s oil supplies. Featuring interviews with over 30 of the most influential people on both sides of the argument, this film examines if the oil age is coming to an end.

Is there a conspiracy of silence to keep the truth from us? In the last four years, world oil prices have tripled. Why? One school of thought blames the weak U.S. dollar. Others say commodity speculators are behind the rocketing oil prices. Now there is a third voice growing in strength that points to another reason—supply and demand. As supplies diminish and production becomes more expensive, the world faces even higher prices and perhaps the collapse of global oil production. Oil Apocalypse Now? tries to separate the facts from fiction.

Everyone agrees that if oil production is to increase, then it will have to come from the group of 13 oil producing countries known as OPEC. But can OPEC really do it? Exclusive evidence from Kuwait uncovers that world oil reserves may be exaggerated by up to 50 per cent, and the men in power reveal that all may not be as it seems.

Travelling to the U.S. Oil Apocalypse Now? examines arguments from The Association for the Study of Peak Oil, a group of industry insiders who’ve been warning of a coming oil apocalypse for over 30 years. Through fascinating archives, viewers are able to look back at the oil shocks from the 1970’s, when prices shot up but then fell back again. Is this time any different? What are the implications if oil prices continue to increase? What are we doing about it and what are the alternatives to our heavy dependence on oil?

Oil Apocalypse Now? is directed and produced by Andrew Evans for Acreditor Films in the U.K.
